Chapter2- Introduction To Biochemistry(Macromolecules) Flashcards
Phospholipid
A lipid that makes up the main part of the cell membrane
A lipid containing phosphorus
It’s head is hydrophilic and it’s tail is hydrophobic
Lipids
Macromolecule made mostly from carbon and hydrogen atoms; includes fats, oils, and waxes
ATP
Adenosine Triphosphate
Plays important role in capturing and transferring chemical energy
Proteins
Macromolecule that contains carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen; needed by the body for growth and repair
Enzymes
Protein catalyst that speeds up the rate of specific biological reactions
Carbohydrates
Compound made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms; type of nutrient that is the major source of energy fort the body
Polymer
Molecules composed of many monomers;makes up macromolecules
Monomer
Small chemical unit that makes up a polymer
Nucleic acids
Macromolecule containing hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and phospholipids
