Involves changes in an individual’s relationships with other people and their skill in interacting
Cognitive development
Involves changes in an individual’s mental abilities. Such as processing information, learning
Heredity
Involves the transmission of characteristics from biological parents to their offspring via genes at the time of conception
Environmental factors
All the experiences, objects and events to which we are exposed throughout our entire lifetimes
Continuous development
Involves gradual and ongoing changes
Without sudden shifts
Discontinuous development
Distinct and separate stages
Seems to appear suddenly
Maturation
A process which is automatic and internally programmed
Our brain must be maturationally ready in order to speak fluently
Longitudinal study
Long term investigation over an extended period of time
Cross sectional study
Selects two or more groups of participants of different ages over a short period of time
Cohort Sequential method
Combines longitudinal and cross-sectional studies. And they overlap each other in age
Developmental change
A relatively permanent or lasting change
Twin studies
