What is mental illness?
Aka psychological dysfunction.
Involving:
Distress
impaired ability to cope with everyday life
thoughts feelings and behaviour that are not typical of the person
inappropriate to culture or society.
Psychotic illness
Psychotic illness- loss of contact with reality
Difficult making sense of your thought/ feelings
Live in a reality of their own mind
Delusions (false beliefs that do not reflect reality)
Hallucinations (hear, see, smell things that are not there)
Non-psychotic illness
Remain in touch with reality despite their dysfunctional thoughts, feelings and behaviours
Intense and/or prolonged feeling of sadness, anxiety and fear
Difficult coping with daily activities
Incidence in Australia
IN 2007, Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) questioned 16-85 year olds.
Almost half (45%) indicated having had experienced a mental of illness at some stage in their life.
45% That is almost half!

The Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)
- The system most widely used by metal health professionals throughout the world to identify and classify mental illnesses for the purposes of diagnosis is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or the DSM as it is more commonly called
- An important features of the DSM-IV-TR is that it does not suggest causes of specific disorders unless a cause can be definitely established
- It simple names the disorders and describes then in specific terms

long term symptoms
