What is language?
The way in which people primarily communicate with one another
What is context?
The setting of a literary piece. This can be an event, idea, statement or term. It also refers to the language used.
What is the dialect?
The language of a piece of literature, specially language that is used in a specific region of the world or a defined social group.
What is dictation?
Words that are said out loud. As they are spoken, they are typed either by another individual or by a computer.
What are errors in grammar and sentence structure?
Mistakes that occur in a sentence that go against proper grammar use.
What is grammar?
How words are used, their context, tenses and the overall flow of words.
What is paragraph structure?
The way in which sentences and grammar are structured and put together.
What are parts of speech?
The category into which a word falls, such as noun, verb, pronoun, adverb, adjective, preposition, conjunction, interjection, etc.
What is sentence structure?
A sentence and its clauses, composition, and classifications associated with that sentence.
What are the strategies for research?
Effective ways to find and collect information, organize it, reference it appropriately and use that information in reference to writing.
What is syntax?
How words or phrases are arranged.
What is the use of reference material?
Credibly established research material that is utilized to collect data for the writing of literary pieces.
What is word usage?
The words that a writer or speaker chooses to use when speaking or writing.
What is an adjective?
Words that modify nouns. Modifiers are descriptive words. Ex. Adorable, dangerous, important, foolish, etc.
What is an adverb?
Adverbs modify verbs. Most common end in -ly. Ex. Angrily, eagerly, honestly, hopelessly, etc.
Adverbs that don’t end in -ly. Ex. Always, never, often, seldom, sometimes
What is a conjunction?
Words that join other words in a sentence or phrase. Also make the written connection between elements. Ex. And, but, for, or, nor, yet, so, first, finally, next, because, etc.
What is an interjection?
Show emotion or greeting. They can be stand alone words or incorporated into a phrase or sentence. Commonly associated with sounds people make when reacting to something. Ex. Yay, wow, yuck, dang, golly, hello, nah, oops, behold, etc.
What is a noun?
A person, place, thing or idea
What is a preposition?
Connect nouns or pronouns in a phrase or sentence. Ex. By, of, off, on, with, up, to, at, as, across, than, past, etc.
What is a pronoun?
Replace the person, place, thing or idea in a sentence. Personal, object, possessive, reflective intensive, indefinite, demonstrated, interrogative, relative, archaic. Ex. Few, he, she, where, what, these, there, nothing, none, my, most, me, everyone, i, it, both, each, anybody, all, another, whoever, where to, whose, yours, whom, etc.
What is a verb?
Shows action within a sentence. Action, linking, helping. Ex. Ask, are, am, add, be, beg, burn, can, care, color, consider, contain, cook, cost, cry, cut, dare, deal, eat, edit, fit, go, five, may, pay, pinch, plan, read, sew, risk, ring, take, talk, throw, sat, zip, was, try, etc.
What is a grammatical error?
Refers to using words, word tenses and other key points of grammar in an incorrect or improper way. Errors also may be referring to mistakes in punctuation and structural errors within a sentence
What is a complete sentence?
A complete thought that includes a noun, also known as a subject, and a verb, which is also known as a predicate. Common errors include sentence fragments, run-on sentences, lack of parallel structure and inconsistencies in word tenses.
What is a sentence fragment?
Sentence that does not have both a noun or verb and therefore is not a complete thought. Typically when dependent and independent clauses do not properly join one another.
What is a run on sentence?
When multiple independent clauses are put into a sentence are not properly connected or linked to one another. Also occur when punctuation is not effectively used. Another common mistake is dangling or misplaced modifiers - like adjectives and adverbs.

What is parallelism?
Used in writing to link or draw connections in sentences and paragraphs. The use of parallels help the overall structure of the information make sense to the reader.
What is inconsistent verb tenses?
A sentence or paragraph mixing up or using multiple verb tenses.
What is a subject verb disagreement?
A common grammatical mistake. The subject and verb will be in agreement. They will coincide with one another in regard to being singular or plural. They are written from the same point of view, either first, second, or third person.
What is a split infinitive?
Occur when, rather than writing the word ‘to’, followed by a verb, the writer inserts an adverb or other word between ‘to’ and the verb.
What is a period?
Used at the end of sentence. It is used in an abbreviation.
What is a question mark?
Used at the end of sentences that pose a question or ask for information.
