Important to choose a topic and method that is appropriate for the audience and age group you are speaking to. Conversation should be consistently productive, guidance and participation should be encouraged and the overall tone of the discussion should be kept positive.

A

It is important for all of those involved to be encouraged and feel comfortable participating in the conversation. Individuals should introduce themselves before speaking. Individuals participating in the group conversation should be given adequate time to consider the topic at hand and contribute in a meaningful way. Individuals should be respectful in their language, tone and body language as they engage with the group to ensure that they conversation stays positive and everyone feels comfortable and safe participating in the conversation.

How to keep the conversation going?

A

Ask follow up questions. Ensuring the clarification is made regarding statements, feelings or questions that are expressed to help individuals or the group understand a point more clearly. Reassuring those who seem unsure or uncomfortable with speaking, encouraging them to share their viewpoint, giving feedback or answering follow up questions. Being patient and allowing individuals time and the opportunity to share, interact and follow up within the discussion.

A

Productive, no hostile and educational experiences. The facilitator should discuss things that are informative or of interest to the targeted individual or group. Material should be presented, whether in writing or verbally, in a way that is healthy, respectful and positive.
