The reactions toward deviant behavior. For example going outside shirtless.
Social control
The term event refers not only to a behavior, but also to the context in which the
behavior occurs. For example, screaming loudly in class.
deviant events
The simple “act” that is performed. For example, screaming out loud isn’t a deviant act in itself.
deviant act
people know what society expects and want to conform to that expectation
Internalization of group
norms
sanctions from others in the event of anticipated or actual nonconformity to
norms.
External pressures
a punishment meant to discourage
deviant conduct Formal would be imprisonment, informal would be criticism
Negative sanction
Reward meant to encourage conduct that conforms to a Norm. Formal: raise in salary, informal would be Praise.
positive sanction
Physical locations that could be connected to a deviant act. The place does affect the definition of deviance.
deviant places
May or may not be deviant. no one is deviant all the time. The role of deviance sometimes emerges on the acts that people perform.
Deviant roles
deviant act but people don’t think it’s deviant. Engaging in deviant acts while continuing to occupy conventional (normal) status and roles. It doesn’t interfere with the role. Example: physician persuading patients to get expensive procedure.
Primary deviance
how people react to it. when the deviant role is reinforced through participation in a deviant subculture. Example: drug user is living as non-drug user but eventually starts participating more in the subculture in drug abuse then is considered secondary deviance.
