Absolutist conception

on the part of the person who may be labeled as a deviant
Reactive/relativist
Consequences - negative is punishment positive is reward
Sanctions
emphasizes behavior that differs from the average experience; it cites rare or infrequent
phenomena. (Look for statistics or numbers that represent how common)
statistical definition-tend not to use to define deviance
groups that share rules, expectations, guideline, standards in the situation about behavior, thoughts and traits. Based on our values or ideas of what’s good or bad.
Norms
People differ from one another in a number of ways: Age, Sex, Race, educational attainment, and occupational status. It’s a sociological term that refers to such variations. You should expect deviance in these situations. (Stratified societies) Some groups are valued more than others.
Differentiation and deviance
A culture within a culture- a collection of unique norms, values, and beliefs which are distinguished between from the dominant culture. Small groups. Subcultures help to solve the problems. Example: neighborhoods, sports teams, age groups, religious groups, police officers, etc. Police officers have a unique norms, value and symbols. Their uniforms are a symbol.
Subcultures
A violation of norms that change over time from group to group. Idea of looking at the entire situation because it varies over time from place to place. Example: acting weird is probably deviant for older people who have no reason to act differently and probably not deviant for people who just won the lottery.
