A culture within a culture- a collection of unique norms, values, and beliefs which are distinguished between from the dominant culture. Small groups. Subcultures help to solve the problems. Example: neighborhoods, sports teams, age groups, religious groups, police officers, etc. Police officers have a unique norms, value and symbols. Their uniforms are a symbol.

A violation of norms that change over time from group to group. Idea of looking at the entire situation because it varies over time from place to place. Example: acting weird is probably deviant for older people who have no reason to act differently and probably not deviant for people who just won the lottery.
