chapter one Flashcards
1
Q
what are the five virus host cell interactions
A
- Productive infection
- Chronic Persistent infection
- Abortive infection
- Latent infection
- Transformation
2
Q
Productive infection
A
>
High production of new infectious progeny virus
>
Host cell is eventually killed within hours to days
3
Q
Chronic Persistent infection
A
>
Low level production of new infectious progeny virus Host cell survives for long period of time Host cell functions either not affected or partially impaired
4
Q
Abortive infection
A
>
Replication blocked at any step after attachment/adsorption Host cell cannot supply some virus requirement, so productive infection terminated Consequences to host cell either negligible (injury) or extensive (death)
5
Q
Latent infection
A
>
Virus becomes quiescent Complete virus genome is conserved but little transcription/translation Future event(s) may trigger reactivation of productive virus replication
6
Q
Transformation
A
> Results in heritable change in host cell
Interaction does not kill host cell but changes its phenotype, endowing the host cell with new properties
Change in phenotype leads to more vigorous growth, immortalization in vitro and malignancy in vivo
Cancer-causing viruses
