Why did tribes find it hard to unite against European encroachment!
The tribes were seperate societies and not used to being together. Disease also killed them
What factors caused Europe to look outward into beginning the age of exploration
Needed land, mercantilism, and religion.
When where and why did Spain establish an American Empire?
They were driven by wealth and later agricultural profit. 1500’s. southern Mexico area.
What was the significance of the actions of Henry Cortes and other conquistadors?
They treated the natives really badly, brutal rule led to tensions between them and the natives.
Why did England emerge as a colonial power in the 1600’s?
They defeated Spanish and gained power.
Explain John Calvin’s theory of predestination.
Religious reason as an incentive for colonization. “Destiny was determined before birth God chooses who is saved and who is not.” Incentive to lead virtuous and productive lives
What is the Protestant reformation?
Luther challenged the church’s practices and beliefs. Spreading rapidly throughout Europe and others offered alternatives to Catholicism.
Puritans?
Wanted to practice religion freely. Some wanted to leave England entirely because of it. “Purify” the church. They became antagonized and left.
Describe French empire in North America. Fur trade.
Forged close ties with the natives inland. Fur traders went deep into the continent and became and extensive part of the colonial economy. Also the French adapted to the Indian society and culture
