Chapter On Thermal Energy Flashcards
What is the definition of temperature?
Measure of kinetic energy in a object
What is the definition of heat?
Energy transferred from one object to another
How is heat transferred?
From hot to cold
What is convection?
The transfer of energy in liquids and gases
What is an example of convection?
1.Area near equator being warm because of the steam from equator
2. When cooking uses the steam to cook something
What is conduction?
The transfer of energy between two objects that are touching each other
What is a example of conduction?
Metal rod being heated by being in fire
Warming of your hands from a heated
What is Radiation?
Transfer of heat from electromagnetic waves
What is a example of radiation?
Tanning bed
Microwave
Sunlight
What is the first law of thermodynamics?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed nor transferred or transformed
What is the second law of thermodynamics?
Energy can flow from a warmer object to a colder object if work is done
What is the third law of thermodynamics?
Entropy would be the minimum value of absolute zero therefore absolute zero cannot be achieved
What is the specific heat equation?
Q=mc🔺T
Describe what happens on the particle level when a warmer object comes into contact with a colder object. How long will this occur?
The warmer particles will slow down and the cooler ones will speed up until they are all going at the same speed.
