Chapter 16 Review Flashcards
Define a fluid and give an example.
Any substance that can flow
Liquids,gases, and plasmas
What happens when pressure is applied to a vessel with a fluid?
The pressure is evenly distributed
How are area, pressure, and force related?
Increase area and decrease pressure
What is the SI unit of pressure?
Pascal (Pa)
Define a Buoyant Force and be able to explain how density impacts the buoyancy of the substance.
Buoyant Force: the upward force caused by the displacement of an object
Density Impact: the density of a object is less then the fluid -will float
Define viscosity and give examples of a fluid with high viscosity and low viscosity.
Viscosity is a measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow
High viscosity is slower
Low viscosity is faster
How does temperature affect viscosity?
Most fluids become less viscous as their temperature increases
Define Arcamedes’s Principle.
The principle that states that an immersed object displaces an amount of fluid equal to its volume and that the weight of the displaced fluid is equal to the buoyant force acting on an object.
Define Pascal’s Principle
The principle that states that pressure applied to a fluid is transmitted throughout the fluid.
Define Boyle law
If you increase the volume of a container of gas the pressure of the gas will decrease, f the temperature is constant
Equation: P1V1=P2V2
Define Charles Law
If you increase the volume of the gas temperature will increase as well, if pressures doesn’t change.
Equation: V1/T1=V2/T1
Define Gay-Lussacs Law
If you increase the temperature of a gas, the pressure increases as well as long as the volume remains constant
Equation: P1/T1=P2/T2
What is the equation for pressure?
P=F/A
Explain why a steel ship floats and a steel nail sinks
An object will float in water f it’s density is less than if the water
