What is communication?
Exchange of information between people; the sending and receiving of messages
What is formal communication?
Involves making use of the official communication channels of a business
What is persuasion?
Presenting a message in a manner that causes someone else to support it
What is nonverbal communication?
Any message that is not written or spoken notice: a written message displayed in a prominent position to attract the attention of people
What are business objectives?
Steps to reach a certain goal of the business
What is sideway communication?
The flow of information between people of similar status or positions
What is verbal communication?
The written or oral use of words to communicate
What is body language?
The use of gestures, facial expressions and posture to communicate
What are communication barriers?
Anything that distorts or interrupts the message and its meaning
What is ethical communication?
In terms of communication, when the information conveyed meets our standards of what we consider right or acceptable behaviour
What are strategies?
Actions that an organisation takes to achieve its specific objective
What is informal communication?
Involves the business making use of unofficial means of exchanging information
What is media richness?
The ability of a communication method to best convey a message
What is active listening?
Listening that aims to produce trust and cooperation and involves the listener remaining silent, but paying close attention to the mood and words of the speaker. The active listener may later para-phrase the speaker’s message and describes the speaker’s mood
What are written communications?
A method used by managers to pass on ideas and information inside and outside a business
What is visual communication?
The use of symbols to communicate
What is filtering?
When a sender manipulates information so the receiver will see it more favourably
What are stakeholders?
Any groups or individuals who has an interest in, or is affected by, the activities of a business
What is grapevine?
The unofficial and informal communication system which is superimposed on the formal network
What are electronic bullet boards?
Display screens placed in foyers, lobbies and offices that present information direct from head office management
What is a brand symbol/logo
A graphical representation that identifies a business product
What is information overload?
An excess of information causing the reader to become overwhelmed and confused
What are internal communications?
Communications that take place within the business
What is external communication?
Is concerned with how a business communicates with and is viewed by other businesses and stakeholders outside the business
What is oral communication?
Direct word-of-mouth contact
What is a model?
A simplified version of reality
What is perception?
The process through which people select, organise and interpret information to create meaning
