[This word’s meanings may seem to contradict one another, but for the Romans they didn’t. Basically, Altus refers to an extreme vertical distance. Being in ‘deep water’ is the same as being in ‘high water’. Whether you are looking from the top down or the bottom up, the distance remains extreme.]
