-uses ‘once upon a time’ to introduce main story, so use of fairy tail convention suggests story has a magic element to it and it’s likely to have a happy ending

- Fred is opposite, he says Christmas is a ‘kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time’
- Scrooge states poor are ‘idle’, he represents the selfish members of the upper classes of a Victorian society- ‘Decrease the surplus population’
