Chapter 9 Vocabulary Flashcards
The set of points in a plane that are a fixed distance away from a given point called the center of the circle.
Circle
The number of nonoverlapping unit squares of a given size that will exactly cover the interior plane of a figure .
Area
The distance around a circle.
Circumference
All outcomes in the sample space that are not in an event E, denoted E or E^C.
Complement of an Event
A number used to identify the location of a point. On a number line. One coordinate is used. On a coordinate plane, two coordinates are used, called the x-coordinate, the y-coordinate, and the z-coordinate.
Coordinate
In a coordinate plane, the distance from (x1,y1) to (x2,y2) is d=(x2-x1)+(y2-y1)
The Distance Formula
An item in a set.
Element of a set
A set with no elements
Empty set
A mathematical phrase that contains operations, numbers, and/or variables.
Expression
A literal equation that states a rule for a relationship among quantities.
Formula
The intersection of two sets is the set of all elements that are common in both sets, denoted by n.
Intersection
The sum of the side lengths of a closed plane figure.
Perimeter
A closed plane figure formed by three or more segments such that each segment intersects exactly two other segments only at their endpoints and no two segment with a common endpoint are colinear
Polygon
A quadrilateral with four right angles
Rectangle
A collection of items called elements
