Chapter 9 Vocabs Deck 2 Flashcards
Impotence
Inability of an adult male to achieve an erection; erectile dysfunction.
Interstitial cells of the testes
- Specialized cells that lie adjacent in the seminiferous tubules in the testes.
- They produce testosterone
- Also called Leydig cells
Ligation
Tying off a tube or blood vessel. Thread or wire is used.
Oligospermia
Scanty (less than the normal number of sperm in semen) sperm count.
Orchiectomy
Removal (excision) of a testis.
Orchiopexy
Surgical fixation of an undescended testis in the scrotum.
Orchitis
Inflammation of a testis
Parenchyma tissue
Essential distinctive cells of an organ. In the testis, the seminiferous tubules that produce sperm are parenchymal.
Penile
Pertaining to the penis
Penoscrotal
Pertaining to the penis and scrotum
Perineum
- External region between the anus and scrotum in the male
- External region between the anus and vagina in the female
Phimosis
Narrowing of the opening of the prepuce (foreskin) over the glans penis
Photoselective vaporization of the prostate
A surgical procedure for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in which a green laser light is used to remove prostatic tissue.
Prepuce
Foreskin; fold of skin covering the tip of the penis
Prostatectomy
Removal (excision) of the prostate gland
Prostatitis
Inflammation of the prostate gland
Prostate gland
Exocrine gland at the base of the male urinary bladder. It secretes fluid that contributes to semen during ejaculation.
Purulent
Pus-filled; forming or containing pus.
Scrotum
External sac that contains the testes
Semen
- Spermatozoa (sperm cells) and seminal fluid secretions (prostatic and seminal vesicle secretions, discharged from the urethra during ejaculation
Semen analysis
Microscopic examination of ejaculated fluids
Seminal vesicles
Pair sac-like exocrine glands that secrete fluid (a major part of semen) into the vas deferens.
Seminiferous tubules
Narrow, coiled tubules that produce sperm in the testes.
Seminoma
Malignant tumor within a testis
Spermatogenesis
Formation of sperm cells
Spermatozoa
Sperm cells
Spermatozoon
Single sperm cell
Spermolytic
Pertaining to destruction of sperm cells
Sterilization
Procedure that removes an individual’s ability to produce or release reproductive cells.
Stromal tissue
Supportive, connective tissue of an organ, as distinguished from its parenchyma. Also called stroma.
Sterilization
Procedure that removes an individual’s ability to produce or release reproductive cells.
Syphilis
STI infection caused by bacteria (spirochetes). A chancre (ulcer) on the genitalia is a characteristic lesion.
Teratoma
Malignant tumor of a testis or ovary; composed of embryonic cells that develop into different types of tissue.
Testicular
Pertaining to a testis or testicle
Testicular torsion
Twisting of the spermatic cord and blood vessels of the testes
Testis
Male gonad that produces spermatozoa (sperm cells) and the hormone testosterone. Testes = plural form. Means two. Testis = 1 testicle.
Testosterone
Male hormone secreted by the interstitial cells of the testes. Responsible for male characteristics.
Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP)
Excision of benign prostatic hyperplasia using a resectoscope through the urethra
Varicocele
Enlarged, dilated veins near a testicle
Vas deferens
Narrow tube (one on each side) carrying sperm from the epididymis toward the urethra.
Vasectomy
Removing a piece of each vas deferens and tying off each end
Vasovasostomy
New opening of the ends of a severed vas deferens. This surgical procedure reverses a vasectomy.
