Chapter 9 Skeletal System Flashcards
Fracture
Partial or complete break, usually caused by trauma.
Pathological fractures
1 cause is osteoporosis.
Can also come from cancer and metabolic disorders.(rickets, paget’s)
Bones weaken and fracture with very little stress.
Compound/displaces or open fractures
Bone ends protrude through the skin. More soft tissue, blood, and nerve damage possible. Greater chance of infection.
Non-displaced/simple or closed fractures
Bones do not penetrate the skin.
Stress fractures
Often hidden “cracks” from repeated trauma in legs and feet. Often not visible on X-ray.
Complete fracture
Bone breaks all the way across into separate pieces.
Incomplete fracture
Partial break or cracks in bones.
Clinical signs of a fracture are….
Loss of function or false motion, pain & edema, deformity.
Reduction means….
Realignment of bones in a fracture or of a joint in a dislocation.
Mastoiditis
Air spaces in the temporal bone become infected. Deteriorates bone and may spread to meninges.
Osgood-Schlatter’s disease
Bone fragments are torn away from the tibia causing pain. Mostly found in teenage boys still growing who are athletic. Enlarged tibial tuberosity results.
Scoliosis
An abnormal side-to-side curvature of the spine.
Lordosis
An abnormal inward curvature of the lumbar spine.
-Pregnancy, degeneration of spine, idiopathic
Kyphosis
An abnormal outward curvature of the thoracic spine.
-“hunchback” caused by osteoporosis, arthritis, poor posture, trauma, or other disease.
