Chapter 9- Product/Service Design Flashcards
Function
A product or service must be fit for purpose, which means that it must be capable of doing the job that it is sold to do.
Products must also be convenient and easy to use. Products should be designed so that maintenance can be carried out easily.
Aesthetics
Products and services should provide a sensory stimulation in addition to performing function.
This is the products service’s aesthetic appeal. Designers must consider elements of a product, such as size, appearance, shape, smell or taste or the presentation of a service, because it has an impact on the choices that consumers make.
Cost
A well ‘designed product or service is more likely to be economically viable – for example the type of screens on an iphone or cost-effective airline routes
Consumer durables
goods that can be used repeatedly over a period of time, such as cars and household appliances
Design Mix
the range of features that are important when designing a product
Design for waste minimisation
- Products that use a lot of energy and other recourses in
manufacturing should be designed to be more durable by designing
products that last a lifetime – e.g. iphone 6 is easier to repair - Designers could be discouraged from designing disposable razors,
plastic cutlery and cardboard plates and paper cups can be replaced
with durable equivalents - In the restaurant industry dishes and menus could be designed to
reduce food waste, such as meat offcuts
Design for recycling
- Some businesses are adapting their production methods so that
newly designed products can be produced can be produced using
recycled materials. For example, carpet manufacturers are developing
ways of using their old carpets in the production of new ones. Glass
manufacturers have long used recycled glass in the production of
new glass. - Some firms make use of waste discarded by other businesses in their
designs - Some use sole recycled materials such as boat and windsurf sales
Ergonomics
The study of how people interact with their environment and the equipment they use
Ethical Sourcing
Using materials and services which come from places that respected the environment and that treat their workforce well.
Product design
the process of creating a new product or service
Resource depletion
The using up of natural resources
Benefits of adapting product designs to changes in social trends
• If businesses can reduce waste, they will use fewer recourses, this
will result in lower costs and higher profits
• If designs reflect social trends, products are likely to be more popular
and sell in higher quantities
