Chapter 9 Positioning Flashcards
Explain best practice for positioning.
Put the car in the best position for you to see and be seen, with due regard to safety.
What are the benefits of the near side position?
- it gives early views through right hand bends
- it allows near side views past lorries and other large vehicles
- it allows extra space for oncoming vehicles
- it’s the best position for left hand turns when there are no other hazards
What are the benefits of central position?
- it gives you good margins of safety on both sides
- it allows you to change position to either side
Explain the benefits of the offside position?
- it gives early views in the approach to left hand bends
- it provides increased safety margins away from near side hazards
- it’s generally the best position for right turns
You should always prioritise ______ over position.
Safety
How to improve the view into near side road junctions?
Position yourself so that you can see as much of the road ahead as possible and so that other road users can see you. You can improve your view into near side roads by positioning your vehicle towards the centre of the road.
Explain following position.
Follow the two second rule.
How to position when turning?
When approaching a bend, position yourself to get the best possible view of the road ahead.
Stopping well short of the vehicle in front gives you several advantages?
- a good view of the road
- room to move around the vehicle ahead if it stalls or breaks down
- if you’re hit from behind, the vehicle ahead is less likely to be effected
- the space in front of you is a safe haven for a bike or motorcycle
- if you become aware that a vehicle approaching behind had left braking too late, you can move forward to allow it extra space to stop on in
- facing uphill, if the vehicle ahead starts to roll back towards you, you have time to warn the driver.
Where to position approaching a brow of a hill?
Adopt a near-side position but be aware of pedestrians or cyclists
