Chapter 2 The System Of Car Control Flashcards
What is the aim of the system of car control?
To prevent collisions by providing a systematic approach to hazards. It’s a decision-making process that enables you to efficiently assess and act on information that is continuously changing as you drive.
What is the system of car control?
The system of car control increases your safety in a constantly changing driving environment by giving you time to react to hazards
What is a hazard?
A hazard is anything that is an actual or potential danger
How does the system of car control work?
Information - position - speed- gear - acceleration
When processing information, remember TUG. What does this mean?
Take
Use
Give
Explain take information?
- look around you
- scan all sides
- use mirrors
- use senses, such as eyes, hear, smell and touch
Explain use information?
- use the information to plan how to deal with hazard
- If new hazards arise consider whether to rerun the system from an earlier phase
Explain give information?
- use a signal to help other road users
- indication, horn and flash of lights
- position of vehicle
Explain position?
- position yourself so that you can negotiate the hazards safety and smoothly
Explain speed?
- adjust speed where necessary
- use the accelerator or brake to give you the correct speed to complete the manoeuvre safely
- use anticipation skills
Explain Gear?
- once you have correct speed, select appropriate gear for that speed
Explain acceleration?
- apply the correct degree of acceleration to negotiate and leave the hazard safety
- take account of speed, presence of other road users, the road and traffic conditions
What are the situations where brake/ gear overlap would be appropriate?
- low speed turns into left and right junctions with a vehicle close behind or approaching
- sharp right/ left turn with a vehicle close behind or approaching
- going downhill
What can incorrect use of brake/ gear overlap result in?
- late, excessive braking and rushed gear changes
- braking late and rushing a gear change can destabilise your vehicle at exactly the point where you need the greatest stability to negotiate the hazard
