Antiretroviral drugs:
Medication to slow the progress from HIV to AIDS.
Antenatal care:
Medical care of women and children following birth.
Aquifer:
Underground layer of permeable rock from which groundwater can be extracted via a well.
Biodiversity:
The different plants, animals and micro-organisims, their genes and the ecosystems of which they are a part.
Ecosystem:
The life support systems of humans and all other forms of life.
Environmental sustainability:
The capacity to maintain the qualities within the physical environment that are considered to be important and valued, such as renewable resources.
Extreme poverty or absolute poverty:
People who live on less than US$1.25 a day.
Family Planning:
The ability to delay or avoid having children; planning for children, including the timing and spacing of births.
Gender parity:
Ensuring that males and females have equal opportunities in areas such as education, employment, voting and decision making, and access to health care and other resources.
Hypertensive disease:
Raised blood pressure levels.
Land-locked countries:
Countries that are enclosed by the land of other countries.
Malnutrition:
Medical condition caused by an insufficient diet.
Maternal mortality:
The number of deaths of women during pregnancy or childbirth.
Micro-organisms:
Microscopic organisms such as bacteria and fungi.
Obstetric care:
Medical care before, during and following pregnancy.
