What is Marketing?
Activities involving pricing, promoting, distributing ideas, good & services to create exchanges.
What is marketing accused of?
Has been accused of engaging in dishonest, manipulative and exploitive practices.
What are the three justifications for advertising?
- Benefit to consumer since introduces new products/services they otherwise wouldn’t be aware of.
- Advertising is a way of providing customers with relevant info about products.
- Subsidizes the media
What are 2 moral demands that follow the justifications for advertising?
- Advertisements must be truthful.
- Deception: consumer led to believe false things about a product - Advertising shouldn’t be manipulative or coercive.
- Manipulation: Taking advantage of psychology to make a sale.
What are the 4 basic values of marketing ethics?
- Truth
- Freedom
- Well-being
- Justice
What does truth criticize advertisements for?
For being dishonest or misleading.
What does freedom criticize advertisements for?
Some forms of promotion pressure or coerce customers, especially those that are vulnerable.
What does well-being criticize advertisements for?
Concerned with the quality and safety of products and criticizes those who don’t have consumers well-being in mind. (cigarettes)
What does Justice criticize advertisements for?
criticizes the price of products, debt arrangments and the targeting of children.
What 3 questions do we ask for truthful advertising?
- How much info about the product is the corp morally required to provide?
- What are requirements on how info is to be presented?
- Are corporations required to tell the truth about their products?
What is an arguement against advertising regarding autonomy?
Forms of advertising are immoral b/c they override a person’s autonomy.
What is Autonomy?
Individuals independence in thought and action.
What are autnomous agents responsible for?
Responsible for the consequences products bring upon them if they freely choose to buy a product.
What happens if an advertisement overrides autonomy?
Then it is regarded as immoral.
What kind of advertising is considered immoral or overriding autonomy?
Advertisements that exploit deep-seated emotion or thought processes.
Basic desire for food, shelter, sex.
