Chapter 9 Landscaping Flashcards
Define Clay and sandy soil:
Clay are the smallest particles, sand are the largest silt (intermediate).
Mixture of living and dead organic matter, air and moisture.
What soil conditions should be considered in planting preparation and plant selection?
PH, drainage and nutrients
What are Annuals?
Can bloom for months until destroyed by frost.
Inexpensive - high impact display of color.
What are perennials?
Bedding plants that re-appear for years after cost is low.
What are bulbs?
It is perennials with thickened under ground storage organ will re-appear.
Why is it important not to over water plants?
Soggy soil restricts root development.
What are disadvantages of a private well?
Initial cost is high - Life cycle cost may show substantial savings in future years. High mineral content may stain buildings and walkways.
What three nutrients are most essential for plant growth?
- Nitrogen - plant growth
- Potassium - hardiness and resistance
- Phosphorus - Reproductive
What conditions generally lead to plant disease?
Bacteria, fungi and viruses
Deficiency of essential nutrients
Poor drainage of soil
Excess salts in soil
Why do indoor plants require more attention than do plants growing outdoors?
Limited space for roots to grow, more sensitive to soil, fertilizers, waters and light.
What support components do indoor parking facilities have that are not often found in outdoor facilities?
Lighting, stairwells, elevators, fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, generators.
What is rigid pavement?
- Reinforced concrete
- Infrequent repair
What are the four basic components of flexible pavement?
- Subgrade
- Base
- Asphalt
- Fabric mat
Why is ventilation important for a garage?
Carbon monoxide detection systems
Exhaust fans and intake dampers
What is the biggest threat to parking structures and rigid paving?
Corrosion is the biggest threat - Chloride from ice melting salts will attack reinforcing steel.
Why is chloride a problem?
Steel should be coated in green epoxy plastic
What are detention ponds, and why are they important?
Man made pond with an outlet structure designed to let out certain amount collects storm water.
What are catch basins?
Storm water collection systems
6-8 inches for up to 12”
What is a sedimentation pond?
Similar to detention where contamination picked up and carried in the turbulent storm water flows to settle out in controlled area.
What is a separator?
Oil and water separators where risk pf petroleum leakage risk. located below ground level made of concrete or steel - vent pipe 6-8ft above ground.
What are the usual spec for separators located below ground level?
5 ft deep, 5 ft wide, 10 ft long
Steel or concrete
On what principle do separators works?
Oil / Petroleum removed are insoluble to water.
These products are lighter then water and with float into chamber.
What can occur if too much development takes place with no regard for the problem of increasing run off?
Flooding
Sinkholes
Settling
