Chapter 9: Joints Flashcards
List and describe the different functional classes of joints
Diarthrosis: free movement (examples: elbow & hip)
Synarthrosis: no movement (examples: sutures of the skull & Gomphosis)
Amphiarthrosis: some movement (examples: between vertebrate & pubic symphysis)
Describe the three structural types of joints
Fibrous: joined by fibrous connective tissue (examples: skull sutures & Gomphosis)
Synovial: space between bones is filled with synovial fluid (examples: ALL diarthroses; shoulder, hip, elbow, knee)
Cartilaginous: joined by hyaline cartilage and fibrocartilage (examples: epiphyseal plates & intervertebral disc)
List the three types of diarthroidal joints
Uniaxial, biaxial, multiaxial
Distinguish between a synchondrosis and symphysis
synchondrosis = hyaline cartilage
symphysis = fibrocartilage
