Chapter 9: Introduction to the Muscular System Flashcards
What are the seven functions of the muscular system?
movement of the body
maintenance of posture
respiration
production of body heat
communication
constriction of organs and vessels
contraction of the heart
What are the four properties of muscle tissue (Three E’s and the C)
1) Contractility
2) Excitability
3) Elasticity
4) Extensibility
What are the three types of muscle tissue?
1) Skeletal
2) Smooth
3) Cardiac
Contractility
Excitability
Extensibility
Elasticity
Skeletal muscle
The muscles we can see and control (voluntary) when we are trying to move a part of our body
Smooth muscle
involuntary muscles that are involved in moving things through the body
cardiac muscle
involuntary muscles that move blood through the body system.
epimysium
loose connective tissue that surrounds the muscles
perimysium
loose connective tissue surrounding muscle fibers; allows for passage of blood vessels and nerves.
endomysium
loose connective tissue surrounding each individual muscle fiber.
tendons
attachments from muscle to something else (usually a bone)
aponeuroses
Motor neurons
A motor nueron attaches and controls several muscle fibers for voluntary movements
How do the blood vessels reach the muscles?
Through the connective tissue
capillary
small blood vessles in smaller tissues
Describe skeletal muscle cells and tissues
large and long multinucelated cells that are stacked together. The nucleus is on the side of the cell. Cells are striated (what else?)
Describe cardiac muscle cells and tissues
