Chapter 9- Interference Of Waves Flashcards
Constructive interference
When waves at together to create a larger wave
The principle of linear superposition
When two or more waves simultaneously occupy the same position in a medium the resultant wave is the sum of the individual waves.
Destructive interference
When the waves add out of phase a smaller wave is created
Beats
Two sinusoids of slightly different frequencies add together constructively and destructively,The periodic fluctuations in amplitude are termed beats
With different sound sources when will the waves interfere constructively?
When the source-to-listener distances differ by whole number wavelengths
d1-d2= wavelength • n (#)
With different sound sources when will the waves interfere destructively?
When the source-to-listener distances differ by an odd number of half wavelengths
D1-d2= (2n-1) • (wavelength)/2
