Chapter 7- Instruments For Studying Waves Flashcards
Acoustical generator
A transducer that produces acoustical disturbances in matter and is therefore a source of sound
Ex) human voice
Transducer
Any device which transforms one form of energy into another
Acoustical receiver
Detects acoustical disturbances and thus is a receiver of sound
Ex) human ear
Two significant categories of transducing devices
Microphones and loudspeakers
Piezoelectric effect in transducing devices (hearing aids, earphones)
Mechanical input into electric charge for using distorted materials
Oppositely, electrical voltage is applied to the Crystal changing its shape transforming electrical energy into mechanical energy
Capacitive effect
Condenser microphones
Voltage between the parallel plates vary and the mechanical motion of the plates creates a varying electrical signal
Oppositely electrical voltage creates a varying force between the plates creating a varying pressure (electrostatic loudspeakers)
Electromagnetic effect
Used in dynamic loudspeakers to convert electrical energy into acoustical energy or in dynamic microphones to convert acoustical energy into electrical energy
Dynamic range (of a transducer)
The range of amplitudes over which its output response is nearly linear
Microphone
Acoustical energy into electrical energy in the form of a time varying voltage
Which two microphones employ the piezoelectric effect
Crystal microphones and ceramic microphones
Condenser microphones
Used in applications requiring high precision and wide uniform frequency response. used in research to produce high fidelity recordings and and hearing aids and portable sound equipment. Typically Inc. a preamplifier in the microphone casing
Electret condenser microphones
In wide use because they offer the advantages of a condenser microphone without the disadvantage of needing a polarizing voltage
Ribbon microphone
Has a very thin metallic ribbon set in the magnetic field. These are used on things like talkshows on the take in sound from one direction
Dynamic microphone
Capable of a relatively high power output over a wide dynamic range often use for life performances and recording sessions
Loudspeaker
Transducing device which converts electrical energy into acoustical energy
