Chapter 9: Fermentation Flashcards
What is fermentation
Fermentation is a metabolic process that converts sugar into acids, gases or alcohol.
Where does fermentation occur
In bacteria, yeast or oxygen-starved muscle cells.
Fermentation general process
Glycolysis sugar and regenerate NAD+, and reuse that for glycolysis
Two forms of fermentation
Alcohol fermentation and lactic acid fermentation
Alcohol fermentation general process
First, pyruvate converts into two-carbon compound with the release of 2 CO2. Second it regenerate by NADH to convert into two ethanol.
Lactic acid fermentation general process
Pyruvate is directed converts into 2 lactate by regenerating NADH, without the release of CO2.
Where does fermentation occur
In the cytosol
What’s the difference between anaerobic respiration vs fermentation
They both do glycolysis, but fermentation uses enzymatic phosphyrylation while the other uses electron transport chain to generate ATP.
