Chapter 9 - Exam 2 Flashcards
Luteal phase
- Luteinziation (formation of CL)
- Synthesis +secretion of large amounts of P4
- Luteolysis
Lutenization
CL originates from ovulatory follicle, granulosa cells ➡️ large luteal cell, theca interna ➡️ small luteal cell
Functionality CL/P4 production
Number of luteal cells, vascularization = blood flow delivery of precursors , recipes basal/tonic LH ➡️theca cells ➡️ cholesterol
P4 targets
Hypothalamus- reduce GNRH pulses, uterus - uterine quiescence plus’s quiet, mammary glands - protes development
P4 effects
- Negative feedback
- Inhibits uterine contractions and reduces Mayomedeial tone
- Promotes production of uterine milk + other secretion
- Completely inhibits estrus or heat
- Prevents LH- surge
- Primes/prepares hypothalamus to be more sensitive to E2
- Promotes alveolar (milk production) development in mammary gland s
Luteolysis effects
Stops P4 production, structural regression to kill CL, removes negative feed back to hypothalamus
What is in the structural regression
Apoptosis (programmed cell death), necrosis - death due to pathological damage ( phagocytic cell, lymph acytes secrete cytokines ➡️ activate macrophages, interferons, tumor necrosis factors
Functionally of CL
Number of luteal cell, vascularization (increase blood flow)
P4 synthesis
Requires basal/tonic LH, theca cells stimulate GnRH
