Chapter 9: Environment and Governments Flashcards
1
Q
Factors that Effect Environmental Issues
A
- Environmental Organisations
- Companies
- Workers
- Consumers
- Governments
- Aboriginal People
2
Q
Climate Change
A
- Refers to the rise of the average temperature of the Earth due to the build up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
- Impacts of climate change includes rising sea levels, extreme weather conditions, etc.
3
Q
Green House Gases
A
- Come from burning fossil fuels, such as natural gas, gasoline, coal, and oil
- Different environments will experience different impacts of global warming
Ex. rising sea levels
4
Q
Fossil Fuels Uses
A
- Can be burned to produce food and metals
- Can be used to help manufacture and transfer goods and services
5
Q
Provinces that Give Off most Green House Gases in Canada
A
- Alberta (oil industry and coal-fired plants)
2.Ontario (manufacturing sector)
Polictial and economic decision making will affect industries and green house gases in these provinces
6
Q
Kyoto Protocol
A
- First international climate change plan countries negotiated
- U.S did not agree to the plan
- Canada agrees and disagrees depending on political party in power
7
Q
Paris Agreement
A
- Legally minded international’s treaty on climate change
- Goal is to limit riding temps to 1.5C above pre industrial levels (at least be below 2Cabove pre industrial levels
- Contries submit their national climate action plans (Naturally determined contributions NDC)
8
Q
International Agreements on Climate Change
A
- Focus on reducing GHG of developed countries
- Developed countries have a larger GHG input
- Developing countries to not has the same GHG restrictions as they slow down the rising economy
9
Q
Carbon Tax
A
- Price emitters must pay for every ton of greenhouse gases they emit
- Business and consumers rake steps (switching fuels or technology) to avoid paying high carbon taxes
- Money is payed to consumers to subside carbon tax (better to make enviroemtally friendly choices)
10
Q
Cap and Trade
A
- Government sets a limit on amount of pollution that is allowed
- Business are given allowances that allow them to spread a certain amount of pollution. If the business produces less pollution then their allowances they can sell them to other business.
11
Q
Solar Panels
A
- Generates clean renewable energy from sun
- reduces GHG
- Helps conserve water resources
