Directed anteriorly and inferiorly and is centered over the midline of the anterior thorax.
Sternum
Supports the walls of the pleural cavity and diaphragm used in respiration.
Bony Thorax
The superior portion of the sternum, is quadrilateral in shape and is the widest portion of the sternum.
manubrium
At the center, superior border of the manubrium; and easily palpable concavity.
jugular notch
Articulates with the sternal extremity of the clavicle.
clavicular notch
The longest part of the sternum (4 inches) long and is joined to the manubrim of the sternal angle.
Body
An obtuse angle that lies at the level of the junction of the second costal cartilage.
Sternal angle
The distal and smallest part of the sternum is cartilaginous in early life and partially or completely ossified, particularly the superior portion in later life.
Xiphoid process
Anteriorly attached piece of byline cartilage.
costal cartilage
Attached directly to the sternum.
True ribs
Attached only to the vertebrae.
floating ribs
Spaces between the ribs.
intercostal spaces
Articulate with C7 vertebra but rarely attach to the sternum.
Cervical ribs
Can confirm identification of the vertebral level, or can be erroneously interpreted as a fractured transverse process of the L1 vertebra.
Lumbar ribs
head, neck, tubercle, body, facets
