Legal Blindness
vision of 20/200 or worse in the best eye.
Best eye no more than 20 degrees
does not mean total blindness
Low Vision
vision of 20/70 to 20/200 (partial sight)
Visual activity
how sharp visual images are perceived
Visual Field
the scope of what you see without turning your head or moving your eyes
Causes of blindness
Refraction, Astigmatism, Heyperopia, Myopia
Refraction
focusing light as it passes through different components of the eye
Astigmatism
focusing items near or far,
usually present at birth, can cause headaches, tired eyes or nausea
Hyperopia
Can see better at far distances
far sighted
Myopia
Can see better at a closer range
near sighted
Cortical Visual impairment
vision loss associated with brain damage
Perceptual abilities
affecting orientation, mobility and way finding (getting around the world)
Teach students Regular Curriculum and expanded core curriculum
to address their needs specific to their vision loss (cross the street, answer the door)
Skills blind students may need
Orientation & Mobility skills
Social interaction skills
independent living skills
career and transition skills
