Chapter 10 Brain Injury and OHI Flashcards
Other Health Impairment
Disorders resulting in limited strength, vitality, or alertness in the educational environment
ADHA, diabetes, sickle cell anemia, seizures
Orthopedic Impairment
Polio, bone tuberculosis, cerebral palsy, spinla bifida, muscular dystrophy that affect educational performance
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
an acquired injury to the brain by an external force result ing in total or partial functional disability that affects educational performance
Other Health Impairments
Asthma, ADHD, diabetes, epilepsy, heart conditions, leukemia, sickle cell anemia
Causes of Orthopedic impairments
Cerebral Palsy- damage to parts of the brain, problems with muscle tone and movement cause by prematurity, lack of blood flow/oxygen
Spina Bifida- bones around spinal cord grow apart or don’t close
Muscular Dystrophy- Inherited from mother or gene mutation causing muscle weakening
Epilepsy
recurrent seizures resulting in problems with consciousness, movement and/or sensation cause by electrical dysfunction in the brain
- Generalized tonic-clonic seizures (jerking seizures)
- Absence seizures- brief lapses of unattention
Traumatic brain injury
an acquired head injury caused by external forced that effects educ. performance
Individualized Health Plan
communication, medications, lifting, positioning, mobility, eating, feeding, respiratory mangement
proper positioning
behavioral/social skill support
