measures intensity or loudness of sound
Frequency(Hz)
measures the cycle of sounds per second
Sensorineural
caused by auditory nerve damage
Conductive
caused with transmission of sounds
structural and sound vibration
Mixed hearing loss
both conductive and sensorineural
sending to the brain
Mild to moderate hearing loss
26 dB- 70 dB, considered ‘Hard of Hearing’
Severe to profound hearing loss
greater than 70 dB
Separation of deaf from those hard of hearing
90 dB or greater
Congenital
hearing loss at birth
Adventitious
hearing loss acquired after birth
Pre-Lingual
hearing loss prior to development of speech/language
Post Lingual
hearing loss after speech and language
Conductive hearing loss
- Otitis Media
- Blockage
- Perforated Ear Drum
abnormality in the pinna or bones in the ear drum
-ear aches/ infections
Sensorineural Hearing loss
genetic causes, environmental causes (sensorial implants)
Cultural Characteristics
the deaf community is a distinct culture
use ASL for communication
Intellectual Characteristics
no significant differences in perception, learning and memory
Academic Characteristics
achievement scores are lower than hearing peers
How to teach students hard of hearing?
oralism speech/lip reading Finger spelling signed exact english total communication (all of the above)
