Effortful control
Underlies self-regulation & Ability to regulate one’s responses to external stimuli (Marshmallows test).
Self-regulation
Ability to control one’s impulses and to stop doing something & Capacity to do something because it is needed.
Executive functions
Underlying cognitive processes, Prefrontal cortex, Inhibition working memory, shifting (of attention) and Critical success (discipline).
Differences between Self-regulation, Effortful control, executive functions
To do something and to be able to stop it, to have control on something & working memory and focus.

Definition of ADHD
Developmental delays and deficits in attention and impulsivity/hyperactivity.
Prevalence of ADHD
Worldwide prevalence 5,2%
Comorbidity for ADHD
Increasing chance with age, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD), Mood/Anxiety, Learning Disorder.
Causes of ADHD
Genes/Heredity, Physiological Factors (Delay in cortical maturation, Deficits in Effective Function (EF), Family/Enviromental factors.
Treatment for ADHD
Pharmacological, Psychosocial, Parenting education & New Trends
Pharmacological treatment
Medications (stimulants) and Issues of adherence and early termination.
Psychosocial Treatment
Do not tend to alleviate core symptoms, Do not help with self-esteem issues, depression parent-child conflicts, Especially for adults with ADHD.
Parent education & new trends
Parent education is important & New Trends (physical activity and cognitive training).
