What is “developmental psychopathology”?
Maladaptive patterns occur in the context of normal child development. consider what is normal at particular ages.
What is “normal”?
Behaviours that are frequently experienced and seen as desirable by members of a group. Behaviour that doesn’t cause distress or a poor quality life.
What is developmental epidemiology?
The field that studies frequencies and patterns of disorders in infant, children, and adolescents.
What is Prevalence?
All current of a set disorder.
Incidence
New cases in a given time period.
Comorbidity
Co-occurrence of two or more disorders in one individual.
Stigma
Child can be treated differently and can be negative because the child will get label.
Risk
Increased vulnerability to disorder. (Child maltreatment)
Resilience
Adaptation (or competence) despite adversity. (Involves protective factors)
Internalizing disorder
Over controlled behaviour and behaviour directed towards the self.
Externalizing disorders
Undercontrolled behaviours and behaviour directed at others.
Differential diagnosis
Which of several diagnoses best describes an individual.
DSM categories of disorders
Emotional Disorders, Stress/Trauma, Feeding/Eating disorders & other physical disorders
What is meant by the DSM
Helps clarify thinking about disorders, improves communication between mental health professionals and improves efforts.
