Binge
An out-of-control consumption of an amount of food that is far greater than what most people would eat in the same amount of time and under the same circumstances.
Body Mass Index
An estimation of total body fat calculated as body weight (in kg) divided by height (in meters) squared.
Cyclical Pathways
- Social pressure to be thin–> body dissatisfaction–>dieting –>diet failure –>Binge eating and repeat
- Negative emotions–>binge eating –>weight gain and repeat
Eating Disorders
Disorders of food ingestion, regurgitation, or attitude that affect health and well-being, such as anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating
Gastric Bypass Surgery
a surgical procedure in which the stomach is divided into a small upper pouch and a much larger lower “remnant” pouch and then the small intestine is rearranged to connect to both.
Grehlin
Grehlin is a hormone that is produced by the stomach. It stimulates appetite.
Leptin
Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells that acts to reduce food intake.
Obesity
The condition of having elevated fat masses in the body. Obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher.
Purge
Purging refers to the removal of food from the body by such means as self induced vomiting or misuse of laxatives, diuretics, and enemas.
Set point
The tendency of our bodies to resist efforts to bring about a marked change (increase or decrease) in weight.
Anorexia Nervosa- Restricting type
low body weight, limit the amount of food consumed, young women
Anorexia Nervosa- Binge/Purge type
eat a lot of food, but puke it all up
Binge Eating Disorder
barely eat then eat a bunch at once, normally overweight
Bulimia Nervosa
very much like anorexia nervosa, the weight is the difference
