Chapter 9 Flashcards
Genetics
Studies how traits are transmitted from one generation to the next
Purebred parents
Offspring who has same TRAITS as parents
Hybrid
Offspring whole parents have different traits
P Generation
Purebred parents. Ex: Purple flower and White flower
F1 Generation
Hybrid offspring of purebred parents. One trait always disappears. Ex: All purple
F2 generation
Hybrid parents F, XF. One trait Always comes back at ratio of 3:1
Alleles
Different versions of the same gene. Gene for flower color has 2 alleles; white allele and purple allele
Every organism has 2 alleles
One from mom and one from dad
Homozygous
HAVE 2 IDENTICAL ALLELES. Purebred parents are HOMOZYGOUS
HETEROZYGOUS
Have different alleles. Hybrid parents are HETEROZYGOUS
Dominant Allele
of present will determine the trait.
Recessive Allele
Only determines the trait if dominant is not present
The Law of Segregation
Gamate will Randomoly inherit one of the two alleles. – Predicted meiosis
