Specialization

ex. in factory only one person makes a product or attach one part of a product
Market revolution
-people bought and sold goods rather than making them for their own use
-created a striking change in the US economy and in daily lives of Americans

-economic system where private individuals and businesses own property and the means of production
Entrepreneur
-french word “to undertake”
-risked their own money in new industries to get investment later
-gained huge profits if succeeded
Manifest Destiny
-the idea that it is a God given right to expand westward to the Pacific Ocean and into Mexican territory
-Americans would travel through Oregon trail towards west
-this destiny was manifest (obvious)
Treaty of Fort Laramie
-treaty between the United States and the Native Americans
-United States earns rights of land on the great plains, have trade access routes, and security assurance
-Natives (Sioux Tribe) get money for the land and can still live there
Santa Fe Trail
Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico
-trail that focused on trade
Oregon Trail
-trail used for Westward Expansion
-conditions were harsh and Americans had to survive to get towards California
-popular during the gold rush
Assimilation
-adopting the cultural practices of a different group
-ex. Native Americans civilizing missions
Texas Revolution
conflict: Mexico bans slavery
-Americans living in Texas heavily practiced Slavery considering they were from the south
-Americans rebel against Mexico (similar to American Revolution)
- Sam Houston leads the rebellion
-Texas becomes Lone Star Republic and begins requesting for annexation to US
Alamo
-group of Mexicans in Texas
-fight at which rebellion took place
-“Remember the Alamo” phrase used as motive for Americans in the rebellion and Mexican-American War because of the devastating kills and loses
Sam Houston
-leader in the rebellion against Mexico gov.
James K. Polk
-president from 1845-1849
-orders Taylor into border lines
-Mexican American War
Zachery Taylor
-general sent to disputed territory to line up on the Rio Grande River
-reports that 16 Americans killed by Americans
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
-treaty to end the Mexican American war
-gives American the land all the way to the west “Mexican Cession” land
Gadsden Purchase
- bought for the purpose of usage of the railroad
-don’t want to have to go over mountains to get to California so must go through southern states
Forty-niners
-group of miners during the time of the gold rush
Gold Rush
-Positive: Economic boom, California’s rapid population growth, statehood in 1850, infrastructure development.
-Negative: Native American displacement, environmental destruction, lawlessness, and discrimination against non-white miners (Chinese, Mexicans)
