radical= extreme
-believe that the legislative branch that should control the Reconstruction not executive
-want to punish the South
-they wanted to push for 14 and 15 amendments to actually help African Americans have a life
Compromise of 1877
formally end the Reconstruction period- a period of rebuilding of relations between North/ South lasting from 1865-1877
-military in the South will leave
Freedmen’s Bureau
- created to aid newly emancipated slaves by providing food, clothing, medical care, education, and legal support
black codes
laws enacted by Southern states to restrict the rights and freedoms of newly freed African Americans, aiming to maintain a system of forced labor and social control similar to slavery.
14th Amendment
-granted citizenship to all those born or naturalized in the United States
-everyone must have equal legal protection and due process

15th Amendment
no one in United States can be denied the rights to vote based off of race
