Republicanism
the idea that government should be based on the consent of the people
Weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation

-proposed by Roger Sherman
-two house Congress (bicameral) where each state would have equal representation in Senate (upper house) but population/ size of state determines representation in the House of Representatives (Lower House)

-Is every slave counted toward the population of the state?
-for every 5 slaves it would be counted as 3 people
-supported by the South

-John Jay negotiated treaties in American Revolution
-John Jay treaty states that British would evacuate the Great Lakes forts that they have been occupying after 1783
-treaty left out American concerns (trading rights)
