Your soul is immediately judged by God right after death.

All possibility of repentance or doing good or doing evil STOP at this moment.
Once God judges the state of the soul, where does the soul go immediately or what are the only three possibilities for our soul after judgement?
To heaven, hell, or purgatory.

Why are people in purgatory if they died in God’s friendship?
Because they still have the stains of venial sins on their souls
What is the purpose of Purgatory?
To get the souls ready to enter into the full presence of God
Why are souls and purgatory joyful?
Because they experienced love of God and are assured of their salvation in Christ
Why are souls still suffering in purgatory?
Because they are being purified of their sins, and they belong to be closer to God, but this suffering is nothing like the suffering of the damned
Why do we pray for the dead?
Because if they are in purgatory, our prayers can help their purification process

The word is not, but the concept is (just like “Trinity”).
