Chapter 9 Flashcards
What are vascular bundles used for?
The transportation of food, water and minerals.
What two transport tissues are they made up of?
Xylem vessels and Phloem sieve tubes.
What is the root?
A plant organ whose main functions are absorption of water and minerals from the soil and anchoring the plant firmly.
What do nitrogen-fixing bacteria do?
Converts nitrogen gas in the air into nitrates which is needed by the plants to grow.
What is the mutualistic relationship between the plant and the nitrogen-fixing bacteria?
The bacteria fixes nitrogen and the plant gives shelter and protection in return.
Name the two ways that water gets to the xylem.
Travels up by osmosis or through the cell wall.
Name three factors that make water move upwards.
Vessels are very narrow, forces push the water, forces pull the water
Name three functions of the stem
Allows transport of water, minerals, and food, it can be used for photosynthesis, and it holds the aerial parts.
What is transpiration?
The loss of water vapour through the stomata of the leaves.
Name the four factors affecting transpiration.
Light, temperature, air currents, and/or humidity.
Name three adaptations for a dry climate.
Changing leaves to spines, having small leaves, and/or having no leaves.
