Chapter 3 Flashcards
What is a solution?
A liquid mixture of at least two substances
What is a solvent?
The liquid which is found in large amounts
What is a solute?
The substance which is found in a smaller amount
What is the definition of diffusion?
The movement of solute from a region of high solute concentration to a region of low solute concentration until the equilibrium is reached
What are the factors that affect diffusion?
Temperature, concentration gradient, surface area, size of particle, diffusion medium
What is the definition of osmosis?
The movement of solvent from a region of low solute concentration to a region of high solute concentration across a semi-permeable membrane
What is a hypertonic solution?
More concentrated than the cell’s cytoplasm
What is a isotonic solution?
Same concentration
What is a hypotonic solution?
Less concentrates than the cell’s cytoplasm
What is the definition of active transport?
The movement of solute from a region of low solute concentration to a region of high solute concentration with energy
What is the definition of reverse osmosis?
The movement of water molecules across a semi-permeable membrane from an area of low water concentration to an area of high water concentration against the concentration gradient
