chapter 9 Flashcards
explicit memory
a conscious memory of an experience or a fact
what are the types of explicit memory?
episodic and semantic memory
episodic memory
one of kind personal experiences; include information about recent or past events and experiences
semantic memory
acquired knowledge and facts or information
implicit memory
unconscious association affecting behavior
what are the types of implicit memory
procedural memory and classical conditioning
procedural memory
motor skills and habits
classical conditioning
repeated pairing between two stimuli leads to learned association
what procedure did Henry Molaison undergo?
bilateral removal of the hippocampus, part of the medial temporal lobe
what were the results of Henry Molaison’s procedure?
His episodic memory was impaired, his working memory was intact, and his skill learning was intact
what happens when episodic memory is impaired?
memories of events that occurred after a brain injury couldn’t be stored
anterograde amnesia
the inability to remember events that occurred after a brain injury; old memories messing up the new memories
retrograde amnesia
inability to recall events that occured prior to a brain injury; new memories messing up the old
what happens when there is damage to the hippocampus?
produces severe anterograde amnesia, but only partial retrograde amnesia
temporally graded
longer-held memories are more protected than more recent memories
