Chapter 8.4 Flashcards
What is three types of metamorphic rock formations?
- Regional metamorphism
- Contact metamorphism
- Dynamic metamorphism
How does metamorphic rock form?
Metamorphic rocks can be formed deep beneath the earths surface where the weight of rock above applies huge pressure. The high temperature can also alter the rock
What is regional metamorphism?
Regional metamorphism is when the rock is altered by heat and pressure.
What is dynamic metamorphism?
Dynamic metamorphism is when the rock is altered by mostly pressure and a little heat.
What is contact metamorphism?
Contact metamorphism is when the rock is altered by mostly heat and a bit of pressure.
What is foliation?
Foliation is the development of layers or bands which can be wavy due to pressure.
Physical and chemical changes in metamorphic
High pressure and temperature can create physical or chemical changers in rock including the formation of precious gems.
Characteristics of metamorphic rock
- Formation of gems
- Wavy layers or bands
