What is magma and lava?
Magma is very hot molten rock.When magma reaches the surface it’s called lava
How does igneous rocks form?
Igneous rocks form from cooled lava from deep in the earth.
What are extrusive igneous rocks?
Extrusive igneous rocks form above ground and have no or small crystals due to the rapid cooling of the lava.
What is intrusive igneous rocks?
Intrusive igneous rocks contain larger interlocking crystals. These crystals are a result of magma cooling slowly below ground
What are the Characteristics of igneous rocks?
- Interlocking crystals ( you might have to use a microscope to see some of the crystals)
- Hard
How to classify and name different igneous rock?
- Is it rough or smooth
- The size of the crystals
- The colour
- If there is any air bubbles
What do you use igneous rock for?
Basalt: buildings,concrete, floor tiles
Dolerite: road surfaces, concrete
Granite: Buildings, monuments road surfaces, kitchen bench tops
Pumice: cleaning dead skin off feet, emery boards for sharpening nails, some soaps that feel rough on your skin
Obsidian: scalpel blades for surgery, ornaments and jewellery, spear and arrow points, pots and vases
