Liturgy of hours
The official daily prayer of the Church. It is also called the “Divine Office.” It is a set of prayers for certain times of the day in response to Saint Paul’s command to “pray without ceasing”
Religious superior
The head or leader of a religious community charged with cultivat- ing in the members of the community a spir- it of obedience to God’s will, the Church, and the rules of the community as well as fostering a lifestyle of prayer, fraternal love, and commitment to minisrty.

classical prayer practice that involves a prayerful reading of the Bible. It means “holy reading.
Charism
A special blessing of a religious communi- ty that helps to define its particular mission and spirituality.
Alb
The long white linen robe worn by anyone who takes a leadership role at Mass. It is connected to the tradition of the newly baptized putting on the white robe of purity after they have received the Sacrament.
Litany of the saints
A prayer made up of various petitions addressed to the saints. It was first pre- scribed by Pope Saint Gregory the Great in the sixth century
Stole
long, narrow cloth that comes in the color of the liturgical season and is worn by the bishop, priest, or deacon. Stoles were originally worn by Jewish rabbis
as a sign of their authority
Chasuble
The outer garment worn by the priest over the alb and stole. It is the same color as the stole and the liturgical season
Apostolic letter
document issued by the Pope or Vatican for various appointments, approving religious congregations, designating basilicas, and the like.
