chapter 8 - Securing the Republic Flashcards
In the election of 1800, how did Federalists and Democratic-Republicans respectively campaign?
- In the election of 1800, Jefferson’s campaign emphasized American liberty and excelled at mobilizing voters
Printing pamphlets, handbills, newspapers, mass meetings - Adams’ Federalist party elitist attitude towards politics made it difficult to match their opponents’ mobilization,
Still dominated in the New England states
Enjoyed considerable support in the Middle Atlantic
What constitutional crisis did Jefferson undergo prior to his presidency? How was it resolved? How did that contribute to the death of the Federalist party?
Jefferson won, but first underwent a constitutional crisis
He and his running mate Aaron Burr both received 73 electoral votes
The election was thrown to the House of Representatives and neither man received a majority vote
Finally, Hamilton intervened and voted for Jefferson because even though he didn’t agree with Jefferson’s political views, at least Jefferson had principles while Burr was very wishy-washy.
*Angered Burr, so he dueled with Hamilton and killed him, killing off the leader of the Federalist party.
What amendment was adopted in response to the electorate crisis of the election of 1800?
Congress and the states adopted the Twelfth Amendment to ensure this wouldn’t happen again
Required electors to cast separate votes for president and vice president
Why did Jefferson call his election a “Revolution of 1800?” Why was the institution of slavery contradictory to his campaign?
Since Jefferson’s election was the first time an American political party surrendered power to the opposition party, he called it the “Revolution of 1800”
