Describe Confucianism.
Kind of like “treat others how you would like to be treated”
- Ren = attitude of kindness
- Li = sense of propriety (behavior, respect of elders)
- Xiao = filial piety (family: respect for parents)
During the warring states period what 3 philosophies arise?
Confucianism, legalism, & daoism
Describe Daoism.
Live in harmony w/ nature & to be disengaged from world affairs
Describe Legalism.
Belief that people are inherently bad & need gov’t to be taught how to behave.
Describe the Qin dynasty.
- adopted legalism
- centralized bureaucratic rule
- standardized money, language, weight, laws
- ^ agri. production (land rights to peasants, movement of farmers)
- divided china into provinces
Why did the Qin dynasty fall?
Bc the public works laborers didn’t like being moved to projects away from home —> revolts —> fall in 207 BCE
What were items that both the Qin & Han monopolized?
Salt & iron
In the Han dynasty there were…
- philosophy= mix of Confucianism & legalism
- educated bureaucrats & monopolies (esp. silk)
- start of silk roads & cities form along the silk roads
- caravanserai; pax sinica; equal-field system
- civil service exams to educate bureaucracy
Why did the han dynasty fall?
Bc of external issues (invasions by nomadic ppl known as XiangKnou) & internal issues (disease & factions)
What were social traits that both Qin & Han had?
- patriarchal
- social class = emperor, nobles & bureaucrats, peasants, artisans, merchants, slaves
- filial piety (respect for elders)
- huge gap betw. rich & poor
